I made the above video because people are always asking me what I look for in cases as an Orlando bankruptcy attorney. It’s a great question, but I think that oftentimes people forget to look at the other side of that equation—what should you look for in a bankruptcy lawyer?

After all, you’re putting your financial health in this person’s hands. You want to make sure that you feel confident that they have your best interests in mind and aren’t just out to make a quick buck by convincing as many people as possible to file for chapter 7.

But how do you know if someone is really good?

Signs You’ve Got a Good Orlando Bankruptcy Attorney

There are lots of measuring sticks to use to tell whether your lawyer is good. Do they win a lot of cases? Do they promptly return your calls or emails? Do they seem knowledgeable and well-prepared?

But for bankruptcy lawyers there are other specific things that you should look for.

Everything is spelled out clearly. Bankruptcies can go from simple to complicated quickly, so it’s important to know what you’re getting for the money you’re paying. Many bankruptcy attorneys offer some kind of flat fee, but often it won’t include vital parts of the process that might crop up. Made sure you know what you’re paying for, and don’t take someone just because they have the lowest prices.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a significant portion of their business. Anyone can claim to be a bankruptcy expert, but where the law is concerned, practice really does make perfect. You want to be able to see that they regularly do a good number of bankruptcy cases.

They’re local. Practically any lawyer licensed to practice can handle your case, but trust me when I say that you want a true Orlando bankruptcy attorney. Why? Because every district has their own rules, and even individual trustees might require specific details not outlined in general bankruptcy law. A local bankruptcy lawyer is far more likely to be familiar with these, which will make your case go more smoothly.

They have a maximum threshold. It’s an unfortunate fact that some of my colleagues run what are known as “bankruptcy mills.” They take on as many clients as possible and use one-size-fits-all solutions so that they can burn through cases. Unfortunately, one size does not fit all. Every bankruptcy case is different, and these kinds of places can end up costing you money by not paying attention to your specific circumstances. That’s why I never take on more cases than we can handle with personal attention. For the best possible outcome, ensure that your Orlando bankruptcy attorney follows the same policy.
