What should you expect when you sit down with an Orlando defense lawyer to for a criminal case consultation? I explained in the video that you should bring in all paperwork relevant to your case and also be prepared to tell your story in as much detail as possible.

There are a number of other important things to know about your initial consultation. Here are four more tips to help you prepare to meet with a defense attorney:

  1. Your Orlando defense lawyer should be frank with you. When you sit down with your attorney, they should be able to clearly explain the charges against you and outline their strategy for your defense. It is our job as criminal lawyers to give our clients and potential clients the most accurate information possible so they can make informed decisions. What an attorney cannot do in a criminal case evaluation is promise you a definitive outcome. What is important in an initial consultation is that someone who is interviewing possible lawyers makes an informed, thoughtful and rational decision as to whom might be the right attorney to represent them in their criminal case. They should base that decision on the lawyer’s apparent proficiency and their ability to listen and communicate; not on whether they are able to sugarcoat or soften the facts.
  2. Your attorney will go over their legal fees. A good lawyer should be upfront with you about what they will charge for their services. The initial case consultation is often free because you have not decided on hiring the criminal law attorney yet, but if you do choose that lawyer, you will need to work out a payment plan. You might also be expected to sign a legal services agreement and pay a deposit.
  3. A criminal case consultation is your opportunity to ask questions. In fact, you should write down a list of questions in advance so that you will remember everything want to ask. The attorney should be able to answer general questions you have about your criminal law case or their services, but they will probably not give you specific legal advice until after you have hired them.
  4. A lawyer may decline your case during the initial consultation. Attorneys do not always accept cases. In order to properly defend you, a criminal defense attorney wants to make sure that they will be able to communicate effectively with you, and that you are not going to withhold any information about the case from them. If it appears that the attorney and client cannot agree on the scope of the case and strategy of defense, they can reject the case.
